He was one of many artists in the circle of Sergei Diaghilev, founder of the Ballet Russes, who revolutionized the art form in the early 20th century. Bakst was a painter who designed costumes and sets. His concept paintings are considered works of art in their own right, as evinced by this striking cover painting from Nikolai Tcherepnin's "Narcisse et Echo, Opus 40."
