Early 20th century antique solar enlargements of earlier antique photos- daguerreotypes or ambrotypes from the 1850s-1860s, judging by the clothes. There was no way to enlarge a daguerreotype or ambrotype, most of which were pocket sized. Essentially, solar enlargements were hand drawn and/or painted copies using a projected image of the original photo as a guide: They used glass & light to project an image of the photo onto paper or canvas. Enlargements were usually done with charcoal, chalk, and pastels; sometimes paint. Quality varies widely depending on how sensitive the artist was. This pair in aquarelle or gouache is very, very good. I think they might be sisters- certainly they came from the same household, so I’m selling them as a pair.
