Widely used in antique jewelry, doublets are a type of assembled gem designed to imitate other, more expensive or fragile gems. This particular doublet is a sapphire and glass doublet, which is made by fusing a clear sapphire on top of emerald green glass.

Doublets were first used in the 1850s when it was noted that molten glass would adhere to certain semi-precious stones. It was a popular imitation for all types of colorful gems because the color of the glass was the only color that could be seen. Doublets were still being utilized in the early 1900s until actual synthetic gems were invented.
