Of Mice and Men, published in 1937, is one of the most widely read works by the American author John Steinbeck. Set during the Great Depression in rural California, the novel follows two migrant workers, George Milton and the gentle but mentally challenged Lennie Small, who travel together in search of work and the hope of someday owning a small piece of land. Through their friendship and the harsh realities of life on a ranch, Steinbeck explores themes of loneliness, loyalty, dreams, and the struggles faced by those living on the margins of society. Despite its short length, the story carries great emotional weight and has become one of the most enduring portrayals of friendship in American literature.

John Steinbeck (1902–1968) was an American novelist known for his compassionate depictions of working-class life and the economic hardships of the early twentieth century. Drawing inspiration from his own experiences working alongside migrant laborers in California, Steinbeck infused Of Mice and Men with a realism that reflects the uncertainty and poverty of the Great Depression. The book was originally written in a form Steinbeck described as a “play-novelette,” allowing it to transition easily to the stage, where it was successfully adapted shortly after publication.
