Maxi Premium EPO™ capsules are a combination of hexane-free evening primrose and flax seed oils, which provide essential fatty acids. Evening primrose oil is rich in essential fatty acids, polyunsaturated fats, which are as essential as vitamins and minerals for the maintenance of good health. The oil contains 74 percent linolenic acid (LA) and 8-10 percent gamma linolenic acid (GLA), better known as Omega 6 oils.

Flax seed oil, another important polyunsaturated fatty acid is an omega-3 fatty acid. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is found in high amounts (50 to 60 percent) in flax seed oil and some vegetables. Approximately 10 percent of Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is transformed in our bodies into two other fatty acids: EPA and DHA (compounds found in fish oil). Consuming flax seed oil may be particularly important for vegetarians who do not eat fish. Flax seed oil is nature's most abundant source of lignans. Lignans are naturally-occurring substances found in plants and are classified as phytoestrogens.

It is important to note, that not all oils are manufactured equally. Some oils are extracted through the use of chemical solvents such as hexane, can damage the oil because of the high heat used in processing. Better quality oils are hexane free. The freshness of the oil is also an important consideration because rancid oils have an unpleasant taste and odor. They can cause gastrointestinal side effects and may not be as effective due to degradation. Maxi Health Research produces oils which are high quality and hexane free.
