Initially developed from the P-35 as the standard AP-4 model, it evolved into a superior high-altitude fighter. Boasting a larger fuselage for enhanced aerodynamics and equipped with inward-retracting main landing gear plus a turbocharger nestled under the fuselage, the P-43 was a marvel of its time. Its heart, a robust 1200hp R-1830 air-cooled star 14-cylinder engine, propelled it to unprecedented speeds of 565km/h during flight tests. This remarkable achievement marked it as the first US fighter to surpass the 500km/h speed barrier.

Not only was it a speed demon, but the P-43 also excelled in climbing, reaching altitudes over 10,000 metres. This capability was famously utilized in 1942 to capture photographs of Mount Everest's summit from an impressive altitude of 13,000 metres. Before the advent of the P-38, it stood alone as the only Allied aircraft that could intercept the elusive Japanese Type 100 command reconnaissance aircraft.
