Grow safed petha (ash gourd) in your own space — whether it's a rooftop bed, a large grow bag, or a kitchen side kiyari. These desi, open-pollinated seeds produce pale green gourds with soft white flesh, commonly used in cooking and sweets. Vines grow fast in hot weather and produce better yield when supported properly.
Best for gardeners with sunny rooftops or open beds where vines can spread or climb freely.
Can I grow ash gourd in a container?
Yes. Use a 16–20 inch grow bag with support for vines. Avoid using smaller containers — fruit size and health will suffer.
How many fruits does one plant give?
On average, 2–4 full-size gourds per plant, depending on space, sun, and feeding.
Do I need to hand-pollinate?
It helps. Like most gourds, ash gourd has separate male and female flowers. Use a soft brush to move pollen between flowers.
Can I use young fruits for cooking?
Yes. Young ash gourds are ideal for curries. For petha, slightly mature but soft-fleshed fruits are preferred.
Can I grow it in winter?
No. Ash gourd needs warm temperatures to sprout and grow. Avoid sowing in cold months.
Other Names: Ash Gourd, Winter Melon, Wax Gourd, Petha (پیٹھا), Safed Kaddu (سفید کدو).
