Lovely antique crystoleum print titled ‘hide and seek’ made by Ullman Manufacturing Company of New York in 1899. Measures 26cm x 21cm. The glass plate is mounted within a wooden gilt frame and is excellent condition.
A crystoleum is a photographic technique that was popular from around 1880 to 1910. The term comes from “crystal” and “oleum” (oil). Here’s a brief overview of the process:
This technique was derived from the 18th-century mezzotint process and was known for its vibrant and detailed images. Crystoleums were quite popular in late Victorian and Edwardian times, but due to their fragile nature, many have not survived.
