 "The title of the panel is Sing Michael, Sing, which is a quote from the song 'Rudie Can't Fail' by the Clash, one of the most important bands for me growing up and still a big part of who I am. I've got the London Calling album engraved in me and I keep coming back to it. There's lots of situations that remind me of its songs and each song reminds me of different situations and references. 'Rudie Can't Fail' opens with Joe Strummer saying 'sing Michael, sing' and the first sung line is 'on the route of the 19th bus' so every time I think of a London bus I hear 'sing, Michael, sing' and that's actually one of the reasons I got involved, the main one being to be able to use my otherwise useless work to help a cause I'm connected to - for some years my wife and I used to distribute warm meals to the homeless community here in Lisbon, her father had a restaurant where I works, and one day my wife came up with the idea and convinced her father to ask the cooks to make a massive soup and add some leftovers from the day and loaves of bread. When the restaurant closed we just packed everything in my tiny car and went to different spots. As for the process for the panel. It's collaged fabrics and spray paint, actually one of the things I'm doing now is this large collage work with repeating motifs, so it made sense to me to try it on the panel. Also the fabrics mostly come from old clothes from my kids (I have 5 kids) so there's a big emotional connection with them." - Francisco Moreira

The Portuguese artist uses oil paint, pastel, scraps of fabric, and wood to create his fantastic array of work. His engagement with found materials allows his imagination to run amidst the natural restrictions of any given object. These works sit somewhere between abstraction and figuration, often playing with familiar shapes and objects in surreal ways. He uses uncanny colour and silhouette to inform his audience of worlds within worlds. As soon as you find a motif to grab onto in his work, you will be completely thrown off course by something entirely new, in a medium so far removed from what initially seduced you.
