Introducing the Harrier, the world's first practical vertical take-off and landing aircraft developed by Hawker Siddeley of the United Kingdom. The AV-8A, also known as the GR.1A or Harrier Mk.50, was adopted by the United States Marine Corps in 1971.
The Spanish Navy also chose to use the Harrier in 1971, but due to a weapons ban policy against the Franco administration, they could not purchase directly from Britain. Instead, the AV-8A was handed over to the United States for training, while the AV-8S was transferred to the Spanish Navy and given the formal name VA.1, with the nickname Matador.
