Whitby is a historic harbour town on the North Yorkshire coast, long defined by the shelter of its twin piers and the working life of the sea. From fishing and shipbuilding to its later role as a seaside resort, the town’s character still centres on the harbour mouth, where stone walls, tidal water and guiding lights mark the threshold between the River Esk and the open North Sea.
The artwork captures Whitby at golden hour, looking along the harbour wall towards the pier lighthouse and the curved breakwater beyond. A wide, honeyed sky washes the scene in warmth, while the calm water below reflects the dark geometry of the harbour structures. Clean lines, strong silhouettes and restrained coastal colour give the composition a timeless, maritime mood—quiet, sturdy, and unmistakably Whitby.
