Like our formula, BioSponge and Bio-Adsorb also provide adsorbent dioctahedral smectite clay to help remove toxins from the gut. The difference is that FullBucket’s BioClay Plus Powder also provides probiotics and prebiotics (to support the gut microbiome), L-glutamine (to support cellular health of the GI tract lining), and electrolytes (to support hydration), making it a more comprehensive option.
Additionally, veterinarians report that our BioClay Plus Powder formula is smoother and easier to work with when tubing sick horses, because of how easily it dissolves in water and because it will not clump in the pump or “explode” from the tube. And there’s no need to mix with yogurt or other ingredients.
The primary ingredient in AssureGuard Gold-NG is psyllium seed husk, used primarily to purge sand from the horse’s GI tract, whereas the primary ingredient in FullBucket’s BioClay Plus is a bioactive clay, included to help adsorb toxins from the gut.
This formula’s primary probiotic, Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii, is a large, complex yeast organism made up of mannoproteins and glucans. S. boulardii is too large for the direct adsorption mechanisms of smectite clay, which binds smaller molecules, ions, and bacterial cells. Additionally, charge dynamics are a factor; S. boulardii has a to slightly negative surface charge, repelling any affinity for the negatively charged smectite clay. Smectite clay’s adsorption mechanism primarily targets positively charged toxins and bacteria, further reducing the likelihood of interaction with S. boulardii. Lastly, S. boulardii promotes healthy microbial populations in the gut and the smectite clay promotes formation of beneficial biofilms. Therefore together, the S. boulardii and smectite clay promote healthy microbial populations and biofilms to protect the gut during the period of distress.
Our team of FullBucket veterinarians recommend starting with the powder in the bucket and then adding 6 L of water a little at a time. We like to say, “it’s like making gravy” – meaning, don’t put all the liquid in at once or you'll get lumps.
The powder form of BioClay Plus is only available for veterinarians because it was formulated to be administered via nasogastric tube as part of your veterinarian’s treatment plan, when working to quickly address serious and/or sudden-onset loose manure and colonic distress. We offer the same formulation in an easy-to-administer oral paste that is available for horse owners to purchase here. This is a great option to have on hand for more mild cases of GI upset, and the paste may be recommended by your veterinarian when your horse is recovering from his initial treatment. Either way, we always recommend talking to your veterinarian whenever digestive concerns arise.
