This is the first trio album in four years by ECM's leading pianist of the 21st century, whose delicate, lyrical and beautiful melodies have attracted many jazz fans. This, his fifth trio album for ECM, develops the characteristics and styles explored in his earlier works, while introducing a wide range of flexibility and a sense of mutuality to the trio repertoire. The bassist is Norway's talented bassist Steinar Laknes. He blends immediately between Toldo's sophisticated chord studies and Jarl Vespesta's delicate stick and brush work, and seems to support his colleague on a deeper level. There is a particular openness to the music, marked by relaxed improvisation and a tendency to reveal secrets and melodies at his own pace.Toldo explains, "The urge to say something, whether abstract or lyrical, comes from within." In recording the album," he comments, "I felt it was better to breathe first, to open up the soundscape in a more organic way, and let the melodies come out naturally.
