Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)
Description:
Shostakovich & Bacevich, who composed while hiding their true feelings! Two composers who were oppressed by the Soviet Union! A masterful performance by the Amsterdam Dudok Quartet, with attention to detail! The Amsterdam Dudok Quartet is an intellectual quartet from Amsterdam, the Netherlands that "as a string quartet of the 21st century, we are always searching for the meaning of the music we play and the best way to reflect the music of the past with a new meaning for the modern audience. Their latest disc, their Rubicon debut (RCD1077) with Brahms' String Quartet, is a challenging and thought-provoking one, combining Shostakovich and Bacevich, two composers famous for writing with their true intentions in mind. Bacevich's String Quartet No. 4, written in the late 1940s, is full of folk music influences and was therefore "accepted" by the authorities. Their ensemble's name is derived from Willem-Marinus Dudok (1884-1974), a prominent Dutch architect who loved music, and the Guardian (UK) praised their "supple, lively sound, structure and careful sense of detail.
