Hartmann, Thomas de (1885-1956)
Description:
Thomas de Hartmann was born in Ukraine. He studied composition under Arensky, Taneyev, and Rimsky-Korsakov, and gained popularity with his ballet "Red Flower," released in 1907. He is also known for his collaborative works with the Russian writer and mystic Georgii Gurdjieff and the painter Vasily Kandinsky. The two works on this album are both world premieres. The "Symphonic Poem No. 1" requires a large orchestra, and the "Fantasy Concerto" for double bass and orchestra begins with a stimulating dissonant first movement, continues with a retrospective slow movement, and ends with a lively folk song-like finale. The concerto is skillfully performed by conductor Kuchar, who hails from his native Ukraine. Naxos Japan
