Timothy Roberts
Description:
Cabanilles was an organist of the Spanish Baroque period. He was respected as the principal organist of the Cathedral of St. Mary of Valencia and was eventually appointed as a priest, leading some to call him the "Spanish Bach. Although he has been compared to Buxtehude, who was active in northern Europe at the same time, most of Cabanilles' works are in the Spanish style of "tiento" (strict counterpoint with flamboyant technique), and all are decorative and make full use of the organ's characteristics. Cavanilles is also said to have composed "the most organ music" of all composers, and the publication of his complete organ works, begun in 1927, is still in progress. Timothy Roberts plays two different organs and harpsichord, depending on the work, and brings out the best of his charm.
