Alice Coltrane
Description:
Alice Coltrane, who played in John Coltrane's band and is known as the godmother of spiritual jazz, is releasing the mysterious "Turiya Sings" to celebrate the 60th anniversary of impulse! Alice had been studying various religions and spiritual music with John Coltrane since the 1960s, but the death of her husband in 1967 strengthened her search for the "heart," and she began to produce her own works as a leader on harp and organ, as John Coltrane had encouraged her to do before his death. She began to produce her own harp and organ works, which were recommended by John Coltrane before his death. He has released many masterpieces of spiritual jazz such as "Journey in Satchida-Nanda" and "Puter the El Dodo" on Impulse Records. However, in 1978, she began a life rooted in Eastern thought (especially Indian philosophy) and became a teacher herself, which led her to retire from commercial musical activities such as recordings and concerts. In 1981, she began composing music for use in ashrams and worship services, and the following year produced a cassette tape for distribution to her students.Kirtan refers to the so-called "yoga of singing," in which prayers are put to music and delivered to God, and her voice can be heard alongside the skillfully manipulated organ, synthesizer, and strings. When it was distributed as a cassette in 1982, only about 500 copies were produced.
