Juon, Paul (1872-1940)
Description:
Paul Juon is a Russian composer of Swiss descent. After studying composition and music theory at the Moscow Conservatory with Arensky and Taneyev, he went on to study at the Higher School of Music in Berlin with Clara Schumann's half-brother Woldemar Barguil, where he acquired the German Romantic style. His works show the influence of his first Russian teachers, but the overall mood is Germanic, as well as a bit of Sibelius, whom he studied. The three sonatas on this album were composed from his early years to his mature years, and listening to them in their entirety gives a clear picture of the changes in Juon's style. The music is by no means easy to understand, but the more you listen to it, the deeper the taste becomes, which is a characteristic of Yuon's works. Naxos Japan
