Coates, Eric (1886-1957)
Description:
Eric Coates is one of the leading composers of British light music. He studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Frederick Corder and viola with Lioness Turtis, and was a viola player. His experience playing in orchestras conducted by Thomas Beecham and Henry Wood contributed to the development of his skills as a composer. He worked on compositions during his years in the orchestra, and in 1919 he began to devote himself to composition and conducting. Initially influenced by Arthur Sullivan and Edward Jarman, he soon began to write familiar pieces that incorporated elements of jazz and dance music, including "Knightsbridge," which became the theme song for the BBC's "In Town Tonight" radio program, and the suite "London," which is best known as the theme song for the British film "London" (1919). Many of you may have heard the lively "Dam Busters March," the music for the British film "The Dam Busters. Naxos Japan
