The German Requiem was first performed in its entirety in English by the London Philharmonic Society at St. James's Hall on April 2, 1873. The English sung version of Brahms' masterpiece, also called the "English Requiem" by the composer and musicologist George Alexander Macfarlane (1813-1887), was extremely popular with English audiences in the 19th century.
